These pieces were originally written between 1894 and 1909 for an ensemble at the Brussels Music Conservatory and had lain unperformed for over a hundred years. They are unique in being scored for a similar brass line-up to that used in the four operas of Wagner's 'Ring' cycle - trumpets, bass trumpet, horns, Wagner tubas, trombones, including contrabass trombone, tuba and contrabass tuba, plus percussion.
They are of superb quality and an exciting missing link in brass music. In 2010 Eric Crees examined the original scores (no parts were found) and made a new performing edition, notating the pieces into clear modern notation, whilst clearing up inconsistencies of instrumentation, dynamics, articulation, speeds and wrong notes.
All six works were recorded in the original instrumentation by students at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 2011 and a world premiere CD released in April 2013 on the 'Musical Concepts' label (MC 145).

From Eric Crees
Devised by Eric with personal insight from having performed these great works, this is a presentation of Richard Wagner’s use of the extended Brass Section in the four operas of his ‘The Ring’ cycle. It has already been performed and presented at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music to great acclaim.
It lasts approximately an hour and twenty minutes and requires the brass lineup used by Wagner: Three Trumpets, Bass Trumpet, Four Horns, Four Wagner Tubas, Two Trombones, Bass Trombone, Contrabass Trombone, Contrabass Tuba and Three Steirhorns.
It is a perfect introduction for music college or conservatoire students (and audiences) to acquaint themselves with the wonderful and innovative brass world of Wagner.
